Aciclovir 400mg Tablets (Treatment)

Aciclovir 400mg tablets are used to treat cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus in adults. The recommended dose is 400mg taken three times a day for five days. The tablets should be taken with water and can be taken with or without food. Aciclovir tablets can also be used to suppress recurrent outbreaks of cold sores. The recommended dose for suppression therapy is 400mg taken twice daily for up to six to twelve months.

Aciclovir works by preventing the herpes virus from multiplying and spreading in the body. Once the virus has entered the body, it reproduces and spreads to other cells. Aciclovir blocks an enzyme that the virus needs to reproduce, preventing the virus from multiplying and spreading.

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. • Do not take more than the recommended dose or take the medication for longer than prescribed.

Discuss all medications you are taking with your doctor or pharmacist before starting aciclovir. • Aciclovir should not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless recommended by a doctor or pharmacist. • Aciclovir can cause dizziness and confusion. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
